Event Details
Given Newark’s location on the eastern coastal plain of the United States, it is not surprising that the residents saw some action during the American Revolution. The battle at Cooch’s Bridge is well known, as is the Battle of the Brandywine at Chadd’s Ford, but what is less well known is that the entire English army marched through Newark on their way from the first battle to the second. Eyewitnesses recorded the results of that encounter between the King’s army and a town whose Presbyterian leanings were thought to be disloyal. Join Professor Jim Jones for a walking tour in Newark that will examine the route through Newark, the townspeople’s response, and the English army’s “depredations” on September 8, 1777.
