Our History of Nonviolence

Nonviolent Seaford added a display of community art and highlights from our nonviolent history to celebrate the 250th anniversary and Campaign Nonviolence Action Days at the Seaford District Library.

Campaign Nonviolence Action Days is a 12-day global mobilization for a culture of peace and active nonviolence. From Monday, September 21—the United Nations International Day of Peace—to Friday, October 2—the birthdate of Mohandas Gandhi and International Day of Nonviolence—patrons can explore nonviolence at the library.

Learn how colonial women’s nonviolent resistance to taxation without representation set the stage for our independence, who was here in Seaford long before the birth of our nation, and about local nonviolence hero Bryan Stevenson.

Community members participated in peace art at the North Star Navigation Center and Community Dollar Dinner by responding to the Langston Hughes poem “I, Too.” This art joins another special 250th exhibit of red, white and blue art by students from Frederick Douglass Elementary School.

Nonviolent Seaford will be at the Seaford District Library for two weeks with Nonviolence Jeopardy, information and community resources from partners, and more fun art activities. Dates, times and updates will be posted on the Nonviolent Seaford and Seaford District Library Facebook pages.

Free and open during library hours: Monday–Friday, 10:00 AM–6:00 PM; Saturday, September 26, 10:00 AM–1:00 PM. Closed Sunday.
