Event Details
When Delaware declared its independence in 1776 it prompted a plethora of changes pertaining to its government and legal system. As the state grew and evolved it reflected on crime and punishment in this new era. One crime that was reviewed by the new government was petit treason, which was treasonous acts committed against a person of authority other than the government. Throughout its history, two Delaware women were tried for petit treason, Catherine Bevan in 1731 and Sarah Kirk in 1787. While their charges were the same, their punishments were not. Join us as we examine documents from the Delaware Public Archives’ collections to discuss these women and the changing legal system of a new Delaware.

Sussex County was bitterly divided over the issue of American independence, though a sizable majority of residents opposed separation from Great Britain. William Peery, a farmer, lawyer, and member of the Delaware General Assembly who also served as a delegate to the Continental Congress in 1786, firmly supported independence. Boaz Manlove, a prominent Sussex County landowner and political figure with strong Loyalist sympathies, just as firmly opposed it. What became of these two men once Congress declared independence, and how did years of war affect their families? Having sided with the winning cause, Peery continued to play a role in Sussex County politics after the war, but how did he manage that in a community where his wartime position had been unpopular? Join us for a presentation that explores these personal stories and the broader impact of the Revolution on Sussex County.

As the days grow short, nothing is quite so comforting as the flicker of candlelight as it keeps the darkness at bay. For 18th and 19th century Americans, candle-lit illuminations, sometimes known as transparencies, were used to cheer, entertain, and celebrate.
This holiday season, we’re reviving the old tradition in partnership with the Biggs Museum of American Art, Historical and Cultural Affairs, and the Governor’s staff at Woodburn to light the night with this unique art form.
Stroll the grounds, enjoy the stately home’s decorations, admire the gathered illuminations, listen to music, sip warming hot cocoa, and make a delicious s’more over a fire pit…there is so much waiting to revive your spirits during this one-night-only special event. Free! No registration required.

The battles of the Revolutionary War have been immortalized in books and films, but rarely do they capture the true nature of 18th-century warfare. As silly as it may seem to march into battle in brightly colored uniforms, all the while your enemy is firing right at you, the combat doctrine of the time was methodical, efficient, and made the best use of the most effective tools available. Flintlock muskets and black powder artillery, while cumbersome by today’s standards, changed the face of warfare and would shape how armies were trained and supplied for years. Recently, the “Star Spangled Banner,” our National Anthem, has been a touch stone for civil rights issues and national controversy. Its words were born out of national crisis, written by a man who was himself no stranger to controversy. America was founded on the freedom of religion. It was affirmed in the First Amendment to the Constitution. On January 30, 1876, a small group of citizens in Harrington celebrated the opening of “the Little Red Church” as it became known. St. Stephens Episcopal Church was constructed in 1875 and opened its doors on that January day. Today the former church serves as one of the three museums owned by the Greater Harington Historical Society. To mark the 150th anniversary of the building, the society plans an evening of song, displays of original artifacts from the church and tours to commemorate this event. The church recently underwent an extensive restoration, including installation of the stained-glass windows. This event kicks off the museum’s celebration of America 250. The event is free for all. Doors open at 6pm. We hope you will join us for this wonderful evening.

In Common Cause: Delaware’s Homefront in the Revolutionary War
Despite its small size, Delaware made significant contributions to the cause of American independence—far more than a single battle or a midnight ride. During the Revolutionary War, Delaware evolved from being part of a larger colony into an independent state, a transformation driven by the sacrifices and efforts of its citizens and civic leaders. These individuals gave their time, resources, and even their personal safety to support the common cause of American freedom.
Join us as we explore the challenges faced and contributions made by the men and women of Revolutionary Delaware, preserved in the records of the Delaware Public Archives.

The Lewes Public Library Spoken Word Society presents The Dan Meyer Choir Sings Love Songs of the Presidents.
The Dan Meyer Choir helps you multitask this holiday weekend by celebrating Valentine’s Day and Presidents Day in one concert: The Love Songs of the Presidents! Come hear the love poetry and letters of former US Presidents set to four-part choral music in this one-of-a-kind event, including the words of George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, and Delaware’s own President Joseph Biden. You will laugh, cry, and be scandalized by the words of these former commanders-in-chief. The Love Songs of the Presidents has been a Presidents Day tradition in Baltimore since 2015 and we are thrilled to bring this joyous event to Lewes in 2026.
The Dan Meyer Choir is Baltimore’s most original community chorus. Since 2009, the Choir has been performing the compositions and arrangements of Dan Meyer throughout Baltimore, Maryland and beyond. Notable performances include Artscape (2012 and 2024), The Star-Spangled Spectacular (2012), Citizenship ceremonies, the Fluid Movement water ballet (2022), a 2017 tour of West Michigan, and many other events, large and small. The Dan Meyer Choir focuses on building community by performing music which emphasizes the history and culture of Baltimore and Maryland.
Each individual attending in-person must register to reserve a seat. Do not list two people on one registration. Please visit https://delawarelibraries.libcal.com/event/15788722 for more details.

Event Details
We are stitching the Delaware Panel of America’s Tapestry (https://www.americastapestry.com/tapestries) to celebrate and educate everyone about the story of Major Henry Fisher, a resident of Lewes, DE and his efforts during the American Revolution to protect and defend the Delaware Bay in Lewes, DE (https://www.americastapestry.com/tapestries/delaware). We have been taking our tapestry across the entire state of Delaware and beyond to give everyone the opportunity to participate in being a part of this project. There are multiple locations and dates involved, mostly public, but also private events as requested. We have social media pages on Facebook and Instagram to share our progress as we have a deadline of April 30, 2026 to finish stitching the panel before it goes for final professional finishing, then on display beginning June 1, 2026.

On July 4th 2026, our nation will commemorate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. All over the United States, communities will be holding events to illustrate and mark our unique history, and to look forward to our next 250 years.
Organizing one such event is 27 year-old artist and researcher Stefan Romero. Stefan is a graduate of Carnegie Mellon University’s prestigious College of Fine Arts, where he specialized in the dress and textiles of Colonial America. As a Fulbright Scholar, Stefan deepened his understanding of the discipline through his Masters Degree at the University of Glasgow in Scotland.
In collaboration with William & Mary (VA), Seton Hill University (PA), and a number of carefully selected historical and craft organizations, Stefan is creating a unique exhibition: “America’s Tapestry”.
The exhibition features 13 hand embroidered panels, one for each of the original colonies. The embroidery will be conducted by talented artisans from New Hampshire to Georgia. The panels illustrate the diverse stories of individual contributions–many overlooked–that reveal each colony’s struggle for Independence. Historical associations from across the states have volunteered to collaborate on the panels’ historical imagery and have generously agreed to host the stitchers as they work.
“The idea came to me while on a work assignment in Europe after visiting ‘The Great Tapestry of Scotland’”, says Stefan. “I was deeply moved by the richness and drama of Scotland’s story as it unfolded from panel to panel. As the product of many talented individuals working across the country to create a harmonious whole, it seemed to characterize one of the defining features of the American experiment.”
Stefan will be working with chapters of the Embroidery Guild of America across the Eastern Seaboard to embroider the panels. After the inaugural display at William & Mary’s historic campus–a stone’s throw away from Colonial Williamsburg, “America’s Tapestry” will tour a number of other historic venues throughout the East Coast.
While many talented volunteers have already come forward to stitch the panels, a project of this magnitude requires considerable manpower. Interested EGA members are encouraged to volunteer to work on this historic project. Each panel will be stitched from July 2025 to June 2026 at a historic institution within the original 13 states. All materials will be provided.
“It is a privilege for me to represent our Nation with a needlework project that will be a legacy product of this historic occasion. As we look forward to our next 250 years, it is more important than ever to preserve a definitive art form that has contributed so much to our country’s distinct artistic identity.”

Voting is a civil right. For many people, it’s a civic duty. Elections give Delawareans the power to choose who represents them and influence policies that affect their families and communities. But democracy doesn’t end when the ballots are counted.
In the 2024 federal election, Delaware’s voter participation reached 67% of eligible voters. By contrast, turnout in the 2022 midterm election was just under 43%.
If your candidate won, what responsibility comes with that victory? If your candidate lost, how do you stay engaged, informed, and active? What does meaningful civic participation look like between election cycles?
Is voter apathy the problem, or are there barriers to participation for New Castle County voters? Is there adequate civics education in our schools?
Join us as we discuss how Delawareans can increase turnout and improve civic participation.
The Bridging Blocks series, hosted by WHYY in partnership with the Free Library of Philadelphia, is an effort to bring people together in conversation so they can humanize each other and learn from one another’s experiences.

Explore the Anti-Suffrage Movement in Delaware, with a focus on Mary Wilson Thompson. While many are familiar with the suffrage movement in general, few know the history of the anti-suffrage movement, especially the role that Delaware women played in prohibiting Delaware from being one of the thirty-six states required to ratify the 19th Amendment.
In this presentation, attendees will:
- Learn who the primary suffragists and anti-suffragists were in Delaware.
- Discover the reasoning behind the stand against suffrage.
- Hear a first-hand account of what happened on that fateful day.
- Learn about the amazing life of Mary Wilson Thompson, leader of the Anti-Suffrage movement in Delaware.
At the end of the program, attendees are offered a chance to vote for or against the 19th Amendment to see how it would fare today.

Throughout its history, two Delaware women were tried for petit treason: Catherine Bevan in 1731 and Sarah Kirk in 1787. While their charges were the same, their punishments were not. Join us as we examine documents from the Delaware Public Archives’ collections to discuss these women and the changing legal system of a new Delaware.

Event Details
In late 1781, John Dickinson was elected President of the Delaware State. At that time, the state faced significant threats from Royal Navy blockading vessels, and active and tactically adept Loyalist privateers and Refugee raiders. Dickinson and other American leaders also faced the possibility of a renewed, vigorous campaign by Crown forces in the Mid-Atlantic region. With Continental Army resources stretched thin, the state’s primary military defense would have to rest upon its militia, a body in need of reform and rejuvenation. From the outset of his administration, Dickinson began transforming his citizen-soldiers into a more effective combat force capable of confronting these military realities.
Through a small manual he produced, Dickinson instituted a system of regularized practices and standardized drills drawn directly from the 1779 Regulations developed by Baron von Steuben for the Continental Army. This presentation will discuss the state of military affairs in Delaware when Dickinson was elected, analyze his manual, and show the process by which he wanted his men trained, his understanding of the complexity of military affairs, and the effectiveness of his efforts. It will further demonstrate Dickinson’s philosophical approach to the concept of “defensive war,” and his perspective on the military responsibilities of citizenship in the early Republic. John Dickinson is generally not considered a military leader during the American Revolution; this presentation will demonstrate that this view requires significant revision.

The Delaware River was more than an obstacle crossed by Washington’s army on December 25th, 1776. At the heart of its 120 navigable miles lay Philadelphia, the Revolutionary capital of a new republic…if it could be won, and kept. Perhaps more vitally than any other waterway, the Bay and River became a strategic actor in its own right, influencing trade, communication, and military movement – especially during the key phase of 1776-1778. Join independent historian and Historic Lewes’ Director of Interpretation, Ryan Schwartz, in this exploration of how the waters that still flow passed Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware influenced the dramatic acts of the United States’ founding drama.

Event Details
The history of Blackface minstrel shows in the United States is shocking. Princeton historian Rhae Lynn Barnes has spent decades digging through archives and private collections to reveal the extraordinary extent to which the caricatured and dehumanizing depiction of formerly enslaved people was a staple of community entertainment for more than two centuries.
In the mid-19th century, blackface evolved from a niche burlesque sideshow to a national obsession, performed in churches, Elks Clubs, schools, on Capitol Hill, and even at the Washington, DC, Gridiron Dinner. Barnes reveals how the practice was eventually federalized during the Great Depression and World War II, used as a bizarre tool of “Americanization” on military bases and in POW camps. Nearly every president until Gerald Ford attended minstrel shows, and President Franklin D. Roosevelt was scheduled to attend one on the day he died. In the aftermath of the Civil War, minstrel shows were used to portray Black Americans as inferior; in fact, the ‘Jim Crow’ South was named after blackface’s founding character. But Barnes also chronicles the long, overlooked Civil Rights fight to stop it, detailing how Black veterans and mothers mobilized to banish the practice from American life.
The Fireside Chat series is organized and moderated by Paul Sparrow, a writer, historical consultant, and the former Director of the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum. Author Barnes will join host Sparrow for a conversation about her stunning new book, Darkology, and the damage it has done to generations of Americans.

“The Several companies of militia from all Parts of the County…seemed quite unanimous and hearty in the Cause determined to defend their country.”
-Henry Fisher to the Pennsylvania Committee of Safety, April 1, 1776
Whispers of independence crept into Lewes, an active port town of ~500 inhabitants sheltered in the lee of Cape Henlopen, in the spring of 1776 yet those whispers were almost drowned out by the drums of war.
As delegates at the Continental Congress in Philadelphia plotted their motion to separate from Great Britain, 89 nautical miles away, Lewistowners were confronted by the long arm of their mother country’s imperial might. Recognizing the importance of the Bay and River Delaware, the British Royal Navy dispatched Captain Andrew Snape Hammond to blockade that vital waterway with HMS Roebuck, a powerful new frigate of 44 guns, the 28-gun HMS Liverpool, and their supporting tender vessels. Suddenly, a conflict that had seemed confined to faraway New England arrived at Delaware’s doorstep!
Delaware responded with a call to arms: Lewes was flooded with nearly 1,000 troops from its Continental Battalion and local provincial companies, earthen fortifications were thrown up, alarm posts were established, and a guard placed at the Cape Henlopen lighthouse. With them came civilians: the women and children connected to the soldiers, enslaved laborers, farmers, and peddlers. Almost overnight, Lewes was transformed.
At Historic Lewes, we open our season with one of our cornerstone Historic Lewes Town Living History events, Hearty in the Cause. Inspired by a turn of phrase included in a report submitted by local Revolutionary leader Henry Fisher to the Committee of Safety in Philadelphia, the group in charge of the river defenses, this event aims to recreate a snapshot of life in old Lewes during those unprecedented days as winter gave way to spring in 1776.
Guests visiting the Historic Lewes Town Campus at 110 Shipcarpenter Street on Saturday, April 18 and Sunday, April 19 will step into the past. Throughout the day, they will encounter more than a score of knowledgeable historical interpreters dressed like 18th-century Lewestowners. They will hear rumors of Loyalist uprisings in the county’s interior, tales of vessels captured by the British, accounts of a sharp fight on Cape Henlopen to protect a Lewes schooner, news of captured Royal Navy sailors locked in the town jail and they will be no stranger to talk of the fitting out of vessels as privateer raiders on Lewes creek, rising prices at market, booming business in the taverns, and more!
Guests can also hear muskets crash as citizens train themselves to be soldiers, enjoy a taste of history at our tavern, coffee-house, or food stall, seek to cure what ails them with a visit to a colonial-era doctor, listen to music of the age, have silhouettes drawn, play colonial games, or complete a heritage craft with family and friends.
A full weekend of learning and fun awaits! Hearty in the Cause runs Saturday, April 18 (10:00-4:00) and Sunday, April 19 (10:00-3:00). Admission is $10.00 per person, with youth aged 12 and under being FREE.

Celebrate Jazz Appreciation Month and Delaware’s 250th by learning more about Delaware’s Jazz History!vv
Over the last century, jazz has come to mean many things to many people. The word can refer to a genre of music, a style of dance, a cultural movement, and an abstract idea. In this presentation, public historian Hannah Grantham from the Delaware Historical Society’s Mitchell Center for African American Heritage will trace the history of jazz as it played out in the First State. Drawing upon newspaper reports, photographs, sheet music, and other primary sources, Grantham will showcase how Delawareans contributed to the development of jazz musical culture as practitioners, listeners, and even as critics. Focusing on a time period from 1900 through the early 1980s, “Delaware’s Jazz History” will answer questions of how jazz arrived in Delaware, how Delawareans experienced jazz, and how the music played into social life.

The story of the American Revolution is one of ordinary people doing extraordinary things, and these stories are just waiting to be told. Genealogy can help us tell those stories, but where to begin? Join us as we examine the records of the Delaware Public Archives, the resources that we can use to piece together our family history, and the documents that record our ancestors’ contributions to the fight for American independence.
This presentation will cover the most common records used by genealogists while also exploring lesser-known resources that can be invaluable for those researching their family tree to complete an application for the DAR or SAR. Some of these overlooked resources include Supply Tax records, Journal A, SAR membership applications, and Oaths of Allegiance.

Dover was not just any small town before and during the Revolution. It had access to world goods and had the money to purchase them.
Many were educated and knew proper societal standards. Not only was it the county seat, but it became the capital of Delaware in 1777.
The residents of Dover and the surrounding plantations felt the rise of patriotism and loyalty to the mother country, but were also concerned about how it would affect them.
They did not always agree, but realized they needed to work together to move forward and keep the peace in a town where everybody knew everyone and many were related to each other.
Come and explore what was happening around town during a time that tried men’s and women’s souls.

Our book this month is “Rebellion, 1776” by Laurie Halse Anderson.
In the spring of 1776, thirteen-year-old Elsbeth Culpepper wakes to the sound of cannons. It’s the Siege of Boston, the Patriots’ massive drive to push the Loyalists out that turns the city into a chaotic war zone. Elsbeth’s father—her only living relative—has gone missing, leaving her alone and adrift in a broken town while desperately seeking employment to avoid the orphanage.
Just when things couldn’t feel worse, the smallpox epidemic sweeps across Boston. Now, Bostonians must fight for their lives against an invisible enemy in addition to the visible one. While a treatment is being frantically fine-tuned, thousands of people rush in from the countryside begging for inoculation. At the same time, others refuse protection, for the treatment is crude at best and at times more dangerous than the disease itself.
Elsbeth, who had smallpox as a small child and is now immune, finds work taking care of a large, wealthy family with discord of their own as they await a turn at inoculation, but as the epidemic and the revolution rage on, will she find her father?
Copies will be available for check out in the Teen Section of the Hockessin Library after April 14, 2026.

Join Delaware Art Museum Head Curator and Curator of Contemporary Art Margaret Winslow and Lynn Herrick Sharp Curatorial Fellow Dorothy Fisher as they discuss the exhibition Citizen Artist, which meets a moment of national reflection with a celebration of artist workers in America. The show brings together artworks from the interconnected eras of New Deal programs like the Works Progress Administration of the 1930s and the lesser-known Comprehensive Employment and Training Act of the 1970s, alongside Citizen Photographer, a special installation that provides a platform for Delaware residents to consider and visually capture what it means to be a Delawarean as the nation marks its 250th anniversary. Citizen Artist is on display at DelArt from April 11 to July 19.
Margaret Winslow has brought a new focus to local art history and culture at DelArt since 2009. She curated the groundbreaking 2015 exhibition Dream Streets: Art in Wilmington 1970–1990. In 2018, Winslow led a city-wide effort to mark the 50th anniversary of the 1968 Wilmington uprisings and commissioned Hank Willis Thomas’s Black Survival Guide, or How to Live Through a Police Riot.
Dorothy Fisher is a doctoral candidate in Art History at the University of Delaware and has served as the Lynn Herrick Sharp Curatorial Fellow at DelArt since 2023. Her research involves the history of arts programs operated in unusual places—like the Space Race era Artist Cooperation Program operated by NASA, the subject of her dissertation.
Registration is required and each individual attending must register.

Join us as we examine the weapons of the American Revolution, how they influenced training and tactics, and how the British and Continental Armies supplied their troops.

Join WHYY and the Lewes Public Library for an evening of discussion on America’s 250. This year, the country is commemorating the 250th year anniversary of our democracy. It is an optimal time to come together as a community and share perspectives on our progress and our future.
Democracy traces its origins to 500 BCE, when the Greeks adopted Demokratia, or “rule by the people.” Ancient Athenians practiced direct democracy, where citizens voted and enacted laws themselves. In the United States we live in a representative democracy, governed by elected officials. The phrase “We the People,” enshrined in the U.S. Constitution, aspires to balance power and ensures that the government serves everyone. Is democracy still the most effective form of governance? How do you think this 3,000-year-old concept can evolve to meet the needs of modern society?
Registration is required. Each individual attending must register.

These artworks in any media will picture historical figures in contemporary contexts – think George Washington at a Drake concert – or feature artist self-portraits in any historical setting – what would you have done at the Boston tea Party? These art projects are designed to connect all students with important people and ideas of the past.

Join us as we examine the weapons of the American Revolution, how they influenced training and tactics, and how the British and Continental Armies supplied their troops.
